Talbot-based Felix’s Ceramics attends each Markers’ Market to sell its handcrafted vases, bowls and platters.
Co-founder Belinda Michael gave up her day job six months ago to hone her skills and support her ceramics business full-time. She described it as “her dream”.
Some of her products, which include clay keep cups, are made with clay sourced from her local dam in Talbot.
“People fall in love with the pieces when they see them at markets because they are able to hold them and feel their energy,” she said.
She said people had a new-found appreciation for handmade objects in the scheme of a mass-produced world.
“People value handmade products for their quality, quirks and attention to detail.”
She and her partner Jason Luca handcraft the ceramics products at their studio in Talbot.
She said attending makers’ markets allowed people to speak to artists and makers about their creations while learning about the processes and time invested in creating them.
One technique she and her partner employ in their products is the sgraffito technique.
The technique involves scratching a pattern onto the glaze of a piece to reveal the clay underneath.
Ms Michael said the Clunes Makers’ Market, which boasts more than 60 stalls, was great because all of the products were being sold by those who created them.
She said the market also underscored the wider philosophy of upcycling and reducing, reusing and recycling.
Other stalls boast products including handmade clothing, food, toys and jewellery.
The Clunes Makers’ Market moved to Clunes Showgrounds last year to increase the number of stallholders and entertainment it could host.
This year the markets will take place from 9.30-3.30pm on March 3, June 2, October 6 and December 1 at Clunes Showgrounds.
Entry is $2 per person or $5 for a family.
