Slaty Yaluk is the first bridge which has been given an Indigenous name in Hepburn Shire

Discussions regarding the unnamed bridge began three years ago, at which time the community voiced a desire for the footbridge, across Slaty River, to be named by the Dja Dja Wurrung Clan.

Following consultation with the Dja Dja Wurrung, the footbridge was named Slaty Yaluk. ‘Yaluk’ translates to creek or river. 

Hepburn Shire Cr Sebastian Klein said it was a step in the journey towards reconciliation. “I look forward to council following through with its Reconciliation Action Plan to consider the brutal colonial history of our area so the names of our geological features do not celebrate the brutality of colonial history, but engage in reconciliation instead.”
