At the Turkeys Fours event on Sunday, December 9, Russell Leishman, Fay Lamb, Kerry Leishman and skip Ron Leishman won first place in the turkeys, while second place was awarded to Kevin Lafranchi, Wal Slocombe, Robert Seamons and skip Jenny Toose, who took home the Christmas puddings.
After that excitement, the club participated in round 10 of the Ballarat District Bowls Midweek Pennant.
The club’s division one team played at home against Buninyong, who were much too strong for the home side. Buninyong won two out of the three rinks.
Skip Helen Mizzeni’s rink of Beth Davidson, Helen Jenkin and Judy Lafranchi had trouble getting within a metre of the jack while skip Jenny Toose’s rink of Sue Lafranchi, Elizabeth Cosgrave, Maureen Goldsmith played stronger but also couldn’t hold up against the stronger side.
But skip Kevin Clohesy’s rink led all day and eventually won their rink by five shots.
The club’s division three team travelled to Central Wendouree for their match. The day ended in disappointment for Smeaton who suffered a huge 50 shot loss.
The club’s division four team did not fare much better, going down by 19 shots to Ballarat North.
Kevin Lafranchi, Esma Slater, Sue Richards and skip Robert Seamons’ rink got across the line by one shot while Val and Ted Rumler, Jenny Tranter and skip Joan Lafranchi went down by one shot.
On Thursday, Smeaton Bowls Club hosted its Singles Club Championship Finals.
In the ladies’ final, defending club champion Jenny Toose was anxious to defend her two-year strong club championship title and top it off with a third.
Toose was head-to-head with Rhonda Armstrong for 26 ends before she eventually reigned victorious 25-20.
Her decisive move was made when she went from 9-14 (14 ends) to 17-14 (18 ends).
Over in the men’s, five time champion Jim Taylor was desperate for another win to add to his list of achievements.
Taylor took a stranglehold on the game 14-10 after 13 ends, with Pickering unable to get on the score board.
Taylor beat Geoff Pickering 25-12 to take home his third consecutive club championship title.
