Stage one of the project, the Pump Track at Hammon Park, is expected to take six weeks to complete, while it is expected the entire project will open to the public by the end of 2020.
The construction of the trails network, which will link plantation forest and gold field areas, has created 30 new jobs.
The 100 kilometre mountain bike trail network is expected to be a boon for the region, putting Creswick on the national mountain biking map.
Within five years of its opening, the state government estimates 80,000 people will have visited the attraction.
In contrast to other trail networks in alpine and remote areas, the Creswick trails will be the only Australian mountain biking trail network within 15 minutes of a regional city and accessible by public transport.
The $2.9 million project is being funded with $2.56 million from the state government, $192,000 from Hepburn Shire Council and funding from community members.
