Eight-year-old Makayla, who is in grade two at St Michael’s Primary School in Daylesford, completed her reading goal on Monday evening. It only took her 20 days to complete, meaning she has beaten the record she set herself in reading 104 books last year, during which she raised more than $3000.
This year, Makayla is raising money for other children with parents living with multiple sclerosis. All funds raised during the readathon go towards sending children on family camps where they can learn about the disease and meet others in similar situations.
“I am completing the challenge because I really wanted to help people living with MS, including my dad,” she said.
Her dad, Michael Doggert, was diagnosed with the disease in February 2016, so the fundraiser is very close to her heart.
Mr Doggert said he was very proud of his daughter.
“I’m thankful to the community supporting her and raising much needed funds,” he said.
Makayla’s mum, Ana, called on people to support the fundraising effort.
“This young girl is an inspiration to me and to many around her, to combine her love of reading with a challenge to help people with a disease she has grown to know so much about.”
