Golf Victoria spokesperson Dylan Grant said the event was part of the annual statewide senior tour.
The 44-stop tour involves participants over the age of 55 travelling to different corners of Victoria. Golfers earn ranking points at each event and the overall winners are crowned at the end of the season.
“The more you play, the more chance of success you have but there is no requirement to attend every stop on the tour,” Mr Grant said.
Hepburn Springs Golf Club had disappointing numbers taking part in the event last year and Golf Victoria was considering cutting it from the tour, but with a lot of hard work on behalf of Hepburn’s members, numbers were up from 45 to 87 participants this year, meaning 22 groups of four golfers enjoyed the Hepburn course.
“The club has really pushed the event this year with a large number of volunteers taking part to make the event special. A large number of participants have commented on how great the hospitality has been here this year,” he said.
26 of the golfers were members of Hepburn Springs Golf Club, while other golfers hailed from as far as Melbourne, Ballarat, Bunninyong, Bacchus Marsh, Warnambool, Torquay and Port Fairy.
“These events pour quite a bit of money not just into the clubs themselves, but also into the towns we travel to. People stay at the hotels, bed and breakfasts and go to local cafes and restaurants,” he said.
Kooringal’s Ian McCleary took out the 2018 Hepburn Springs Senior Amateur with a final score of 136, continuing his stellar season.
The women’s scratch stableford event saw Helen Pascoe, from Bunniyong, take out the title with scores of 30 and 31.
The stableford section was taken out by Hepburn Springs’ Bev Smith, with a score of 31 after Thursday’s round and 36 points on Friday.
