Saturday, Woody – Songs of Freedom, Bruce Hearn and the Machinists @ Theatre Royal, Castlemaine
After three performances in Melbourne in late 2017 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the death of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, this show is coming to the Theatre Royal.
Strange Tenants front man Bruce Hearn has created this stunning live production. The concert will be spearheaded by Hearn and his hand-picked band consisting of Kavisha Mazella (guitar/mandolin), Chris Pascoe (accordion), Peter Beulke (double bass) and guests including Kerri Simpson and Mick Thomas. Woody Guthrie: Songs of Freedom will be a unique opportunity to celebrate the music and politics of the struggle for a better world free from war, racism and inequality. Songs include Woody’s particularly topical song I Ain’t Got No Home, with the extra verse that Woody wrote in 1950 about his landlord, one Donald Trump Senior. You may note the political leanings of some of the artists – no accident and no apologies given.
