Opinion: Thoughts on the f word

As soon as I said it, I realised what I had said - and how wrong it was. 

The f word still seems like a dirty word to some. It evokes strong images of placards and burning bras and man hating.

But while many reject the label, there is nothing wrong with being a "feminist" - in fact, most women would identify with the movement and what it is trying to achieve. 

It says women should have the same pay, the same respect and the same representation in politics and business.

It says women deserve the same rights as men. 

I don't know many women who would disagree with that. 

And thanks to the pioneers before us, I have no doubt women will keep striving for equality in their everyday lives. 

But what about the violence that still lingers in our homes and our sanctuaries? 

White Ribbon Day is all about reversing this silent epidemic - and it's working. 

The day is about changing the norm, and not closing the door on the issue. It's about looking out for your friends - and not accepting what is so clearly wrong. 

It seems people want to speak up too, with every community leader and representative I spoke to more than willing to share their insight. 

Many said it was about looking out for your mates, and making sure they didn't take out their issues on women. 

Others said it was about the simple premise of respect and not taking others for granted. 

It's a good sign that feminism is working - and hopefully one day, all men will see women as not only equal, but worthy of respect.
