A group of 18 New Zealand principals visited the school to learn more about a new style of research-led classroom teaching.
St James’ is one of 10 schools throughout Victoria linked to the Science of Learning Research Centre, a Melbourne University program combining the collective knowledge of 100 neuroscience, education and psychology researchers and applying those fields to education.
Principal Peter Fahey said the focus was on learning and creating an agile design with different technology, elements and teaching styles to suit all students.
“The focus is on learning for all, not teaching,” Mr Fahey said.
“Education is based on a standardised model so when children come in to school it’s children that have to fit model.
“But what good educators say is we all have different learning styles and rates of learning, and it’s the school that has to change its practice.”
Technology and flexibility are key, as is involving children in setting their own goals, interests and knowing how best they learn.
