Emergency services were called to the blowhole in the Munmorah State Conservation Area on Sunday after the woman’s body was found floating face down.
She had been stabbed multiple times.
Strike Force Elise has been formed, comprising the state’s homicide squad and Tuggerah Lakes detectives to investigate “all circumstances surrounding the woman’s death which they are treating as a homicide’’.
”A post mortem examination is ongoing; however, it is believed the woman suffered a violent death having been stabbed numerous times,’’ police said in a statement.
The woman, who was found naked with no jewellery or other personal items, is described as being of Asian appearance, about 170cm tall, with a medium build, shoulder-length dark hair, and aged from her early 20s to mid 30s.
“Police have released a computer-generated image of the woman in the hope someone can help to identify her,’’ the statement said.
“They are also asking any person who is concerned that they have not seen a missing friend, work colleague or neighbour to come forward.’’
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Jubelin, of the homicide squad, said the cause of death would not be clear until after the autopsy was completed.
“Our assessment of the injuries are that she had been the victim of a violent assault prior to her death,’’ Detective Chief Inspector Jubelin said.
“We want to know who she is and we wil go from there, her identification will obviously open up a neighbour of enquiries for us.’’
EARLIER:
DETECTIVES investigating the mysterious murder of an unidentified woman whose body was found floating near the Snapper Point blowhole are sweating on a full autopsy report.
Forensic pathologists are expected to finish the post-mortem examination on Wednesday.
Police divers and operational support group personnel finished a wide land and sea search at the notorious rockfishing spot on Tuesday, two days after the woman’s naked body was retrieve from the big seas adjacent to the blowhole.
She had suffered what appeared to be multiple stab wounds to her neck.
Despite a wide-ranging search, including fingerprint identification attempts, the woman’s identity remained a mystery on Wednesday.
But Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin, of the homicide squad, said investigators were confident they would solve the riddle of the woman without a name.
He repeated calls for public assistance.
The woman is of Asian appearance, appeared to be aged between 20 and 35 and did not have any tattoos or birthmarks on her.
Her body was found on Sunday morning before a homicide investigation was launched.
The rocky headland is part of the Lake Munmorah State Conservation Area, which is shut daily between 6pm and 5.30am.
Detectives have not discounted the killer may have spent a night inside the park and believe they may have intimate knowledge of Snapper Point, where a windy, dirt track ends at the headland and adjacent to a cliff down to the blow hole.
