She admits it's easy in the every day to dismiss seasonal change - the falling autumn leaves, the lush summer growth.
But now the Glenlyon woman is asking people to stop and watch.
In a new project, interested residents will be able to document how their favourite tree evolves over 12 months.
People will be given a scrapbook and an open brief to monitor change.
"I just wanted people to get involved in what’s happening with our seasons, and what was the definition of a tree," Ms Durston said.
"I think they’re fascinating - the way they grow, the way the bark forms.
"It's mind boggling because we don’t know it all happens. It's easy to not really notice it, to pass it by, but I'm hoping this will change that."
Ms Durston said people could choose any tree and record change by writing, photographing or sketching.
She said people could look out for how the leaves and bark appear, which twigs grow and fall off, if seeds are germinating, what creatures sit on the tree, and what the plants around it do.
"There really are no restrictions and you can even investigate the history of the tree or the species itself," she said.
"We really want people to just go with it."
There is $1000 in prize money up for grabs, with the competition open to residents in Glenlyon, Drummond, Denver, Porcupine Ridge, Wheatsheaf and Coomoora.
