Delta blues specialist Skip Sail discovered acoustic blues at 15 and became totally obsessed with the music of the Mississippi Delta.
Basing his repertoire on the traditional blues songs of Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Buka White and Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip takes people back to the early 20s and 30s , as he performs old style delta blues 'hillbilly' mountain music with such virtuosity.
Looking every part the 1920s delta blues journeyman, he has spent many years overseas studying early blues guitar styles.
Returning to Australia in the early 90s, he performed at major music festivals, playing gigs and taking some very good slide guitar workshops.
Friday November 21 at The Grande Hotel, Hepburn Springs
Local muso Geoffrey Williams sings Nina Simone and Bill Withers. Williams grew up on a diet of Desmond Dekker, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and 60s and 70s UK pop. He is currently a performing and recording artist, promiscuously releasing several albums on various labels. Geoffrey describes his music as "Marvin Gaye meets Joni Mitchell in a UK suburb over a pot of my mum's rice and peas."
Saturday November 22, DJ Clay Ravin – In the Lounge at The Daylesford Hotel
Clay Ravin, erstwhile drummer in alt rock outfits The Thing and Dirtbird, has DJ-ed at local venues and parties for over ten years. This Saturday night he takes you on a rhythmic journey from the gypsy trailers of Eastern Europe via the African steppes to the dark subterranean clubs of Berlin and New York. Genres covered include balkan beats, bhangra, world, afrotech and tech house, with touches of disco, hip-hop, breaks, glitch and dubstep.
Sunday November 23, Benny Walker at The Old Hepburn Hotel
Benny Walker’s album Sinners and Saints combines a blend of blues, roots and acoustic folk.
Walker’s song-writing is complemented by a rich, soulful voice, that has earned him the Victorian Indigenous Performing Arts Award for Best New Talent 2012, the Arts Cultural Australia Day Murray Shire Council Award and a 2011 Deadly Award nomination for Most Promising New Talent in Music.
A soulful singer, nice lead guitarist and voice that reminds me of a very youthful Ray La Montaigne, this is one singer worth catching.
