Head teacher Dianne van Baalen said students swapped books with their peers for a gold coin donation.
She said money raised would go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation – an organisation that works to address literacy levels in remote indigenous communities.
‘‘We have been looking at Australian history, remote communities and life in the past,’’ she said.
‘‘The students dressed in olden-day clothing and we have been doing a number of related activities.’’
Ms van Baalen said the national celebration was a chance for schools to highlight the importance of literacy and numeracy in learning.
‘‘[The week] is about celebrating learning and raising awareness of the importance of reading, writing and mathematics skills,’’ she said.
The state government initiative runs from August 25 to August 31.
