After 153 years, school number 552 will close its doors to the to the community and the hundreds of children educated at the school.
Smeaton primary is 153 years old and has 10 pupils left, all in the senior grades.
"There are no preps on the horizon," principal Reg Farquhar said. "I have enjoyed my time here at the school and support from the community.
"The school council has made a courageous, but correct, decision which has brought down the curtain on 153 years of education, affording the school the dignity and respect it deserves."
"We've got the pub and the bowling club, but it's sad the school's going," School council member Kristi Pedretti said.
The school had suffered from dwindling numbers for much of the past decade and it has now got to the stage where continuing was not viable.
Presently there are only 12 pupils with only one girl at the school and no children starting prep class.
Ron Cosgrove, member of Friends of Smeaton, has been canvassing Hepburn Shire to purchase the school for use for the community.
"All the facilities are already there and we would save money in the future. I think it would be a good investment," he said.
"It's really up to the younger members of Smeaton as a community to consult with the shire."
Ballarat Secondary College made inquires to use the school for an external campus but no decision has been made.
"It will now most likely be sold," Mr Cosgrove said.
He said he was disappointed that many of the school assets have already been removed.
"The water tank, solar panels and even the garden beds where the children grew their vegetables are gone," he said.
Existing students have found other schools at Daylesford, Creswick or Ballarat. The principal Reg Farquhar will be repositioned at Gordon Primary School.
