It was a day of reflection and reliving with the wonderful display of vintage hotrods by the Castlemaine Rodders and old-style racing in the Vintage Stock Cars and Heavy Hot Rods by the Ace of Spades club and our local vintage driver Tony Nawn.
The Ace of Spades club and Tony took their cars out on the track for a chance to do a workout.
The track proved a little greasy for the oldies in the first heat with Car 33 Indian Mick Chedwiggen spinning out and causing damage to the diff, but the track improved as the day went on and the rest of the field was able to put the pedal to the metal and have fun.
In the pits there were lots of stories and photos shared.
One of the Daylesford Speedway members had a photo of a three car accident on this track, taken in 1969 and then Peter “Agrravator” Quaife pulled out his photo album and showed us the same cars, after the accident back in the pits.
It was great being able to piece this history together.
With names like Mick ‘Hollywood’ Dann, Bob ‘The Gnome’ Maloney, Jonny ‘B Good’ Watson, ‘Crackers’, Jenny ‘Akk’ Akker, Steve
‘Couta’ Dann, Victor ‘the Inflictor’ O’Neill, Frankie ‘Flatout’ Robbinson, Billy ‘Burnout’ O’Neill, Callum ‘The Kid’ O’Neill and Pete ‘Agravator’ Quaife, it was like being back in the 1960’s.
Mick Dann (Car 3 “Big Bad Red”) started his racing career at the tender age of 12.
He not only races vintage cars but was a contender in the Victorian Street Stock Titles in March at Horsham Speedway and also raced at Redline on Saturday night, before coming over to Daylesford.
Callum O’Neill is touted as being the youngest in the Ace of Spades Club at 18.
He has been known to be able to get his father’s car up to speed of 153mph. The Bunsen Memorial was hotly contested and Peter Newlan Car 203 fighting hard to beat Nash Harris’ car 20 by half a length on the finish line.
Our next race meeting is on Mother’s Day weekend.
Saturday is club racing and the drivers will have their last chance to improve their point position in their classes, then on Sunday more club racing along with novice ladies races, the caravan race and a demo derby.
Racing begins at noon.
