An early nomination for Australian album of the year, Thelma Plum is a young star in the making and this gig will be an absolute must for music fans of all genres.
And by that, while thrashing Better in Blak over the last few weeks, I mean I heard elements of most contemporary genres within this compelling, urgent political work, where she makes a powerful personal statement relating to what it means to be young, indigenous and female in this country in 2019.
Fist-pumping anthems sit side-by-side with acoustic ballads, stories of lost love and, hell, Paul McCartney even added a guitar part to one of her tracks without even meeting her.
Some two years in the making and recorded in New York, London and Sydney with frequent collaborator, producer Alex Burnett (Anthony & Cleopatra, Sparkadia), Better In Blak is 12 tracks of Thelma at her best; it's an inside look at the Gamilaraay musician's life.
According to Thelma: "This album reflects some pretty dark times in my life but these songs kind of helped pull me out of it, it's cathartic in a weird way. I'm excited for people to hear these songs but some of them come from grim places, so it's a bit daunting having them see the light of day. There's some funny stuff on there, too, it's not all doom and gloom!"

Dave Le'aupepe, from Gang of Youths, and a co-write from Paul Kelly are both featured on the record.
Thelma will be accompanied by her band, to allow the audience an insight into the many nuances of this debut album and her early EPs and singles. A must see.
