.
Saturday, Alpha Hall, @ Palais Hepburn
Original Indie pop/rock, featuring Adam Mezzanzo on violin.
Friday, Never Easy @ Blue Bean Cafe
Saturday, Nathan Power @ Blue Bean Cafe
Power had a wild childhood, growing up in Yemen, Kenya and Pakistan. He almost got expelled from boarding school for brewing his own dandelion wine in his wardrobe. His family had pet baboons and an eagle.
There are no animals on Power's debut EP We Were Wild. Instead, these songs use folk guitar, mandolin and cello to focus on a different kind of wildness - the kind that lives in wandering hearts caged in bad relationships and salaried desk jobs.
People can clearly relate. In 2017, Power sold out the launch of his debut single Solstice, which was played across PBS, 3RRR and Triple J. Last year, he rode the momentum with a 15-date national tour and a string of festivals.
If you're into artists like the Tallest Man on Earth, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, you'll be into Nathan Power.
Sunday, Ellerby @ Blue Bean Cafe
Saturday, Jess Ribeiro Leah Senior and Galaxy Hop @ Bridge Hotel Castlemaine
Jess Ribeiro, indie pop singer-songwriter, returns to Castlemaine for an intimate show at The Bridge.
Ribeiro's 2012 debut album My Little River was a folk-country influenced work, while her second album (Kill It Yourself) was described as "a slow-burning indie-noire masterpiece".
With album number three, LOVEHATE, she has created a work influenced by all things New York, from the Velvets through to Blondie and Talking Heads. LOVEHATE is seen as a confirmation that Ribeiro is a gifted songwriter, exploring a range of genres and complex and varied content. Layered guitars, psychedelic undertones and a stronger band feel permeate this work. Fellow Melburnian multi-instrumentalists Jade McInally (Jade Imagine) and Dave Mudie (Courtney Barnett) were recruited for the project. Recording started in February 2017 in Lyttelton, on the south Island of New Zealand.
Special guests at Castlemaine will include Leah Senior and Galaxy Hop. Melbourne folk performer Senior's latest album, Pretty Faces (2017). pays homage to her dark folk roots. Her distinctive voice features on King Gizzard's apocalyptic album Murder of The Universe, as the female narrator.
