Police believe Graham Gene Potter, now 61, has been wearing fat suits and a wig to avoid detection since he went on the run from a Melbourne court in 2010.
Photos released for the first time on Monday give the public a glimpse inside his life as a fugitive.
The images detail his campsite - raided by police in the months after he went on the run - and hand-written notes about surviving on the run and threatening to kill anybody who recognised him.
Police also released photos of knives, fishing line, food stockpiles, and newspaper job advertisements that had been highlighted or circled.
The former Wollongong coalminer spent 15 years in prison for the 1981 murder of teenager Kim Barry.
After meeting the 19-year-old at a Wollongong nightclub, Potter lured the shop assistant to his Corrimal flat before killing her and dumping her torso and dismembered head and fingers below Jamberoo Mountain lookout.
He was convicted and served 14 years before being released from jail in 1996.
Potter has been wanted by police since he failed to appear on bail for conspiracy to murder charges at Melbourne Magistrates Court in February, 2010.
He is most likely to be living somewhere rural, and could be anywhere in the country. Police have warned women in particular to be cautious, after he befriended an elderly widow who took him in as a lodger.
Police said a friend of that woman recognised and confronted Potter, who threatened to kill her if she turned him in.
"This is not a man you want as a friend," Detective Senior Constable Finn said in a statement on Monday.
"This is someone who has a history of incredibly significant violence, including the murder of a woman in NSW, and there's nothing to indicate that he won't act with violence again."
At the time he went on the run, Potter was accused of being hired to kill a man at Melbourne underworld figure Mick Gatto's son's wedding in 2008.
As well as two counts of conspiracy to murder, he was also facing federal charges over a record $440 million ecstasy and cocaine haul in August 2008.
Victoria Police has teamed up with other federal and state police to track him down since Potter failed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court in 2010.
Detective Senior Constable Finn said Potter has honed his skills to escape capture.
"We know he is known to disguise himself using hair colour, wigs and fat suits," he said.
"Potter also has a number of manual labour skills, which allows him to seek work in a wide range of places.
"He has welding, bee keeping, hydroponics, aquaponics, gold prospecting and earth moving skills, and is most likely to look for work as a caretaker, farm hand or outback station hand."
The 61-year-old is known to live in rental homes, caravan parks, and camp out.
"All of this means he's very comfortable laying low in remote and regional areas, so we really urge people in those locations and industries to continue to keep a look out for him."
Potter has also gone by the aliases Josh Lawson, John Page, Jim Henderson and Peter Adams.
He is described as Caucasian, 175 centimetres tall, medium to solid build, with a fair complexion, brown eyes, brown-greying hair and a ginger beard.
He often wears a gold sleeper earring in both ears, wears glasses and regularly wears a gold chain around his neck.
Police released the images on Monday to remind the public that Potter remains on the run and renewed their calls for help.
A $100,000 reward for information leading to his capture remains in place.
