Melville was awarded in the instrumental category of the highly regarded song writing contest.
The competition received almost 19,000 entries from 140 countries this year and is judged by prominent American musicians and industry representatives.
Melville's tune Junkyard features his guitar skills, Gideon Brazil on saxophone and Leigh Fisher on percussion.
"[It includes some] inspiring and appropriately absurd playing," Melville said.
Melville is known for his unique and finespun compositions.
"[It was] amazing to be selected as the winning entry for the Instrumental category," he said.
Last year Melville toured the region for the first time - playing in independent bookshops, art galleries and libraries - with his jazz trio Antelodic as a way to road test new material.
Recently moving to Ireland, the trio will play around Europe throughout June.
