In the early 2000s, interest and participation in country cricket rapidly declined in the region.
Hepburn, as well as several other clubs in the competition region, were forced to pull the pin due to an inability to retain existing players and recruit new cricketers. This ultimately led to disbandment of the Daylesford District Cricket Association.
But in 2017, a group of dedicated sportspeople decided to re-form Hepburn Cricket Club following a resurgence in interest.
The re-formed club entered a seniors B-grade and under-16 side in the Castlemaine District Cricket Association competition in its first year. Since then both teams have continued to soar to new heights.
In the 2018-19 season, the B-grade seniors made the finals but were beaten narrowly in the semi final.
The team will move up to the A-grade tier next season.
The under-16s made finals in their first year and powered through their second season undefeated to win the grand final by 10 wickets.
Hepburn Cricket Club president Lindsay Olver said the club had big plans for the future but was taking it one step at a time.
Every player from the under-16s side will remain in that division for the upcoming season so will have the opportunity to continue to develop.
The side will be split into two with captain Nash Robinson to head one side, while vice-captain Brayden Yanner will move into the role of captain for the side.
Each captain has recruited six or seven players to make up the remainder of their team.
"So, from having no cricket three years ago, next year we will be expanding to having more teams in the competition.
"We will have an under-13s team, two teams in the under-16s and the senior team is going up to A-reserve," Mr Olver said.
The team had one girl playing in the premiership side last year, Lucinda Lowe, and have so far recruited five others to play alongside her in the upcoming season.
Mr Olver said the club hoped to form a girls team sometime down the track.
