Michael Ambrose Endicott, 75, was found guilty after trial last month of taking nude photos of the student at Villanova College in the 1970s.
The Brisbane District Court jury found he photographed his nine-year-old victim nude during a school hiking trip in 1975.
Three years later, Endicott photographed him naked in the school tower, the trial heard.
Years later, when the boy was a teenager, Endicott took him into a change room and told him to strip then took photos of him in the shower, the jury was told.
But the Court of Appeal on Wednesday ordered his convictions and 18-month jail sentence, suspended after six months, be set aside.
The court will publish its reasons at a later date.
