The museum is currently gathering information about women to create an archive of the stories of those who have contributed to the region in years gone by.

Museum volunteer Judy Files said the idea for the women's archive came about after Bessie Harrison Lee was posthumously added to the Heather Mutimer Honour Roll on International Women's Day last year. 

Lee was a suffragette, activist for gender equality and a public speaker for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

"Women's stories have historically not been told as much as men's," Ms Files said. "Women also contributed to the community and these stories need to be collected now while people remember them."

The women are currently speaking to older community members to gather oral histories.

The group are looking to gather information about women in health services - nurses, midwives and doctors - and are looking at other sectors of interest, like artists, shop owners and sporting figures for future.

Another area of interest is the contribution women made to the community through service organisations like the Country Women's Association and Red Cross.

Leanne Howard said the stories needed to be collected so they did not get lost.

"Women are half the population and there are so many stories that haven't been told. Women have unique perspectives and a different way of contributing but these have not been recorded in newspapers or other records."

The museum aims to exhibit the stories of women each March. This March, it will host an exhibition about renowned surgeon and female trailblazer Dr Gwen Wisewould  from Saturday, March 2.

It will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1.30 to 4.30pm until March 17.

The exhibition will have a small display inviting visitors to contribute the names and information on women they know.

An event will be hosted on March 17 at 2pm with guest speaker Sharon Radau, before a short film of an interview of Dr Wisewould is presented.
