Smeaton started the day off well with Adam Sewell and Jayden Toole winning the first men’s set 6-8.
But the Berties hit back in the second men’s set winning a tiebreaker.
Smeaton’s Toole and James Maher hit the courts with a fire in their bellies for the third set, winning 2-8 against Ballarat’s Peter Van Dreven and Peter Brown.
The women on both sides of the net played admirably.
Ballarat Berties started off strong as they won the first set 8-2.
But first time Smeaton players Jaslyn Skilbeck and Elyse Maggior clawed their way back in the second set, securing a 6-8 win.
But Ballarat Berties pushed their advantage in the third women’s set, taking an 8-4 win.
As a result, Ballarat had a narrow one game lead over Smeaton as both teams headed into the final three games of the day, the mixed sets. Smeaton came back in the mixed sets, winning all three games, 5-8, 3-8 and 5-8 over the Ballarat outfit.
By the end of the day, Smeaton managed to come back and win the day by 10 games.
The team looks forward to carrying this momentum into their round six encounter next week.

Also in the A-grade, Kingston Black defeated Lawrence, while Creswick defeated Miners Rest.
Kingston’s Hugh McManus, Drew Elliot, Richie Robinson, Samantha Huggett, Rachel White and Tracey Holmes, 7/65, beat Lawrence’s John Kinnersly, Tynan Haintz, Broden Haintz, Megan O’Beirne, Sally Punshion and Helen Rae 2/57 by eight games.
Creswick’s Tim Stirling, Ryan Bolton, Griffin Andrews, Lily Fraser, Tayte Fraser and Kerry Armstrong took on Miners Rest, finishing 4/64 against Miners Rest’s Tom McGrath, Euan Tait, Simon Remington, Ang Willett, Seona Becham and Jan Miles, 5/56.
