The symposium, funded through Thorne Harbour Health (formerly the Victorian Aids Council) was aimed at older LGBTQI+ people to get them talking about issues like healthcare and accessible facilities in regional areas while connecting older LGBTIQ+ people across Central Victoria.
Ro Allen, the Victorian Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, presented at the symposium, along with well-known comedy cabaret entertainer Dolly Diamond, who MC’d and performed at the event.
Allen said the symposium was important:
“The elders have so much to offer. That's why it is so important to stay connected and build connections between older members of our rural and regional LGBTIQ+ community.”
Other notable highlights were presenters Sally Goldner from Transgender Victoria and Bisexual Victoria and Dr. Philomena Horsley from the Gender and Women’s Health Unit at the University of Melbourne, while participants also took part in a number of workshops aimed at engaging participants to create and share networks and information.
Community Wellbeing Manager at Cobaw Community Health, Tim Adam, said the symposium embraced the community’s diversity.
“This symposium recognises the diversity that sits within the LGBTIQ+ community in Central Victoria, and we want to celebrate that diversity. It’s a celebration of ideas, thoughts and actions.”
