The Ballarat and District Bowls Division pennant season opened on Monday October 1 with the midweek pennant. In division one, five changes were made to last season’s premiership team due to illness and injury.
Clunes kicked off the season against a stronger City Oval outfit, who had strengthened its team with the recruitment of some experienced bowlers.
City Oval won all three rinks with similar margins to post a strong 37 shot outright victory.
Over in division five, Clunes hosted Victoria. Clunes skipper Laurie Judd posted an eight shot victory but Victoria won the other two rinks to win outright by 13 shots.
In the weekend pennant, Clunes’ division two players travelled to Linton where they faced off against another team who had recruited well before the beginning of the new season.
Clunes was only able to win one rink. Mark Vorbachs’ team won the last end to record a one shot victory but Linton posted good wins in all of the other rinks and so won the game comfortably by 59 shots.
Finally, in division five, Clunes hosted Ballarat North at home in what was a closer game. Ballarat North won one rink, but Rex Martin’s rink played out to a draw while Josh Polson’s rink won by 13 shots. Bill Hudson, Danny Sprong, Lois Hudson and Fred Seers all won very comfortably to ensure Clunes had a win.
