Ed Comelli, who lodged the planning application, said he had lived in Daylesford most of his life.
“There have always been two supermarkets but at the moment there is only one option. The public would like a second alternative,” he said.
Mr Comelli said the project, with an estimated cost of $1.2 million, would include the construction of a supermarket, associated landscaping and 30 parking spaces on the corner of 63 Central Springs Road and 30 Bridport Street.
The site currently houses a dwelling and outbuildings, used previously as a business and sits close to residential properties and Daylesford Public Swimming Pool.
He had not yet decided which brand of supermarket he would build if the plans were approved.
