Bill O’Connell, a long time supporter of the oval being named after the McCashney family, said the family had given the land to Trentham so it could have a permanent football ground.
He said 11 McCashneys had played football for Trentham, with four McCashneys playing in the Victorian Football League, (now the Australian Football League) with two of them so good they went on to represent Victoria. One McCashney played in three premierships for Trentham Football Club while two others played in two premierships. Moreover, another McCashney player competed in a junior premiership for Trentham.
Also on the day, William O’Connell was made a life member.
He has been on the Committee of Management for the reserve for more than 40 years, for many of which, he drove his tractor into town from East Trentham to mow the oval.
One day, he was unable to mow the lawns so his wife, Kath, took on the mowing duties instead. And that she did- with a Victa hand mower.
