The bus will enable not only non-ambulant residents but also those with restricted movement to participate in regular outings on a more regular basis as the new nine-seater bus includes a wheelchair lift and single wheelchair position, allowing easy entering and exiting from the vehicle.
It was purchased with funds provided through a half a million dollar bequest to the Hepburn Health Service.
Before its purchase, wheelchair bound and immobile residents often had to miss out on excursions and trips enjoyed by other residents.
Director of Nursing Paul Hilder said the bus would allow more residents to engage further with the community as they now had more freedom to explore Trentham and the surrounding district.
The facility focuses on patient centric care which is all about the holistic view, it is viewed as important for the residents to get out and socialise for their mental health.
"More residents will now be able to participate in excursions, like recent outings to the Beechworth Bakery in Bendigo, Bendigo Pottery, Op Shop hopping, Mount Macedon and Hanging Rock."
Resident Jean Mayne said she loved going out on the bus, while another resident, Irene Curran said she was thrilled about the purchase of the new bus.
“We are surprised and feel lucky with such a wonderful gift to our aged care facility," she said. "It will save me climbing up the steps!"
The previously used 12 seater bus is being kept for outings taking more than nine residents.
