A WANTED poster has been distributed about the Hepburn Shire for extras to help bring bushranger Ned Kelly to life once more in a Russell Crowe blockbuster.

Casting directors will be in Clunes on Sunday seeking “Caucasian males and females” aged 15 to 60 for an “old fashioned dance” scene, celebrating Federation Day in the late 1800s.

The historic Clunes streetscape is set to become star-studded once more with a big budget remake of The True Story of the Kelly Gang

Filming for the dance scene is scheduled to take place in mid to late August, but little else is known about shooting for the movie based on the Peter Carey novel.

Academy Award-wining actor Russell Crowe has been cast to play Australian bushranger Harry Power, who played mentor to a young Ned Kelly.

English actor George McKay will play the lead role while the film will also feature Australian star Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Game of Thrones, Girl with a Pearl Earring).

Hepburn Shire, which has helped assist film scouts source locations, posted on social media that filming would take place at Clunes Town Hall for two days – one in July and one in August.

Australian director Justin Kurzel announced in 2015 he was bringing the story back to the silver screen.

It is the second time Clunes has been the backdrop for the nation’s most famous bushrangers’ story. The 2003 film Ned Kelly, with Heath Ledger in the title role, used the whole township in production.

Clunes’ Fraser street was transformed for the Picnic at Hanging Rock miniseries last year. The township’s film roll call also includes Mad Max and the Tomorrow When the War Began series.

Extras casting for The True Story of the Kelly Gang will take place at The Warehouse, 36 Fraser Street, in Clunes on Sunday, 10am to noon. Eligible hopefuls will be required to have a photo taken and fill out a questionnaire.
