Not only have the schools been pooling resources, but they have also created a physical education program which has benefited both schools.
Bullarto Primary School principal Jo Pegg initiated the program with the college, which sees four high school aged students lead her weekly physical education class.
“The VCAL students in Years 11 and 12, who are choosing to go into the workforce after year 12, have been taking my P.E session for one and a half hours each week,” she said. “The older kids are given the opportunity to display leadership, work on communication skills and have the chance to work with younger children.”
Another aim of the program is to develop connections and break down the barriers between primary and secondary school.
“From my point of view, it helps with the transition for my older children who will head off to secondary school soon,” she said.
“They then have experience of spending time walking around a bigger school with bigger kids. It sort of alleviates the feeling they have that everyone will be so much bigger than them.”
“It’s also about being community minded.”
The VCAL students lead games and activities for the five children, as well as six of the college’s year seven students for an increased number of participants.
