ChallengeMD sees 30 people embark on a marathon bike ride through the Victorian Goldfields in order to increase awareness of Muscular Dystrophy, while raising funds for programs, services and research.

So far, only one person has registered for the event, which would see riders take off on Thursday September 27. MDA said it hoped more people would sign up so the event would not be cancelled.

The event involves the 30 riders departing from MDA headquarters in North Melbourne before riding over 450km over four days to a total elevation of 2,400mtr. 

The course takes riders through picturesque mountain landscapes as well as through the Goldfields region. 

Executive Director of MDA, Boris Struk, said the ride is important for fundraising.

 “ChallengeMD began back in 2006 with a bike ride around Vietnam and it is great to still have these events running 12 years on from the first. At MDA we rely very much on our own fundraising initiatives such as ChallengeMD Goldfields to fund MDA’s programs, services and research for the Australian MD community and it’s extremely important for us to keep these initiatives going.

“We already have registrations coming through as well as expressions of interest and we’re looking to grow our team to 30 riders who will take on this extraordinary challenge for people living with Muscular Dystrophy, as well has having a memorable experience, making friends and of course, having fun,” he said.

“The overall aim of ChallengeMD is to encourage people to endure a significant physical challenge on behalf of the one in 625 men, women and children in our population affected by Muscular Dystrophy and we are honoured to have incredible participants with every ChallengeMD we run.”
