Saturday, A Whale Called Phoenix, 8-11pm @ Spa Bar, Daylesford
Don’t miss this four-piece indie, acoustic-based band from Melbourne. Forming in 2012 as a duo, lifelong friends Jimmy “Phoenix” Pollock and Anthony Nero set out to record songs and music videos using their iPhones.
It was all part of an attempt to capture more “honest” sounds, away from studio trickery.
Friday, Friday Frivolities @ Old Hepburn Hotel
The usual Friday night festivities: Happy Hour from 6-8pm, cocktails, plus trivia, Joker Poker, Bar Wars, a community raffle and footy tips.
Friday, Sounds Of Simon (Paul Simon Tribute Show) @ Blue Bean Cafe
Saturday, Tom McGowan @ Blue Bean Cafe
McGowan, who is from Ballarat, writes playful and evocative folk tunes.
McGowan was a member of Melbourne band Folding for Air with Jenny Hval, Mark Campbell and Anthony Petrucci.
Sunday, North East @ Blue Bean Cafe
Saturday, Raised By Eagles @ Bridge Hotel, Castlemaine
Raised By Eagles’ debut album of 2013 immediately tweaked the interest of Americana music aficionados across the country.
Their first release scored the band a nomination for best country album at that year’s Age Music Victoria Awards.
Over the past five years, the band’s captivating performances have cemented Raised By Eagles’ reputation as one of Melbourne’s best live acts.
The band went on to release a widely acclaimed follow-up LP, titled Diamonds In The Bloodstream in May 2015.
This album also received award nominations and went on to win best country album and best emerging artist at the Age Music Victoria Awards.
Raised By Eagles has been a standout act at two Out On The Weekend festivals, the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Bigsound, the Bello Winter Music Festival and the Dashville Skyline.
The band’s third album, I Must Be Somewhere, was released in May last year and scored four stars in Rolling Stone Australia.
It also won best country album at the Age Music Victoria Awards.
This gig is for all fans of Americana, country-rock and great singer-songwriter material.
Mick Thomas said: “Raised by Eagles opened for us on our national tour in 2017.
“I watched ’em every night and was taken in by their wide-eyed commitment to their craft.
“Their music soars and meanders, takes you to familiar places you’ve never been. To call them alt-country only tells half the story.”
