Joy Nunn has taken home the June Monthly Medal as well as the Elaine Kirby trophy after a close game last week.

Ms Nunn won the game with a score of 87, 17, 70.

Each month, the members of Hepburn Springs Golf Club compete for a monthly medal, but the June medal winner also receives the Elaine Kirby perpetual trophy after the 18-hole stroke event.

The Elaine Kirby trophy was first awarded in 2012, after the women’s part of the club decided to honour Elaine Kirby by giving out a trophy in her name each June.

The event was one of Kirby’s favourites and Ms Nunn recalls her always showing up to golf perfectly groomed and wearing a skirt and stockings.

Kirby was involved in Hepburn Springs Golf Club for more than 30 years and was also president of the Ballarat District Women's Golf Association.

The event is always hotly contested as many people show up to participate for the trophy, many whom were also mentored by Kirby.

Ms Nunn, who has played golf for about eight years, said “it was really special to win the trophy,” especially as she had not won a monthly medal for three years.

“When I first started playing golf, Elaine was still really involved in playing every week. As a senior player she would take the newer members under her wing. For me, it was terrific. She always chose to go out in a group with some of the newer members in it. Because she was experienced, it meant we were given a fantastic induction, not only into the club, but also into the complexities of golf.

“She did it in such a lovely way. No question was ever too silly to ask,” Ms Nunn said.

Ms Nunn said it is always terrific to see new members coming to the club.

“It’s a really welcoming, country club. Elaine typifies the aspect of Hepburn Springs Golf Club that I think is fantastic; without all the volunteers and the time that goes into the club, it probably wouldn’t exist. The example she set for newer golfers was that the game is more than the sport. It is about contributing to a group, which becomes a group of friends you really look forward to playing with because you enjoy their company,” she said.
