Fifth heading into round 13 of the competition, City Oval surged to second thanks to its victory against Creswick.
The side won three of four rinks in the overall 97-72 triumph.
Helping its jump up the table was the fact that three of the top four teams suffered defeat.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was Buninyong’s loss to bottom side Sebastopol.
The Kookaburras landed just their second win of the 2017-18 Ballarat District Bowls Division campaign with the three-shot result at home.
While Sebastopol is still last, its victory saw Buninyong tumble from fourth to be now sitting fifth and four points adrift of the finals bracket.
The battle between first and second saw Ballarat East emerge victorious over Central Wendouree.
And it was skipper Peter Wilson and his rink that got the Two Blues over the line. The Bears took the points in all of the other rink battles on the day, but Wilson’s thumping 38-15 defeat of John Quick’s side helped Ballarat East record a 95-91 overall result.
That saw Central Wendouree slide to third, while the Two Blues remain nicely clear at the summit.
The other upset of the weekend came at Learmonth, where the hosts proved too good for Ballarat.
