This time, the event was all about making sure each and every participant know they were a hero for getting out and getting moving.
Running, walking or strolling – taking to our streets made a difference.
The mission has consistently been for helping to fund a redeveloped children’s ward, which can improve the lives of families right here in Ballarat and across western Victoria. Improved facilities and services should save many from the need to travel to Melbourne, with greater access to the medical superheroes in this city.
Run Australia general manager Sam McGuane said Ballarat is a community that really identifies with the cause.
Numbers were slightly down, maybe a little due to cool weather and misty rain, but it still made a statement with more than 4690 people turning up for action.
This was the sixth year the Bat-like Run signal has gone out (yes, this year even Batman turned up in the Ballarat events precinct), and it was a great show of community that we all keep turning up.
Children’s health at the event’s core, there was a great buzz about the event with so many juniors out on course, particularly testing their legs in a run.
In a city so often in the spotlight for health concerns, these were real positive steps for inspiring people of all ages and abilities to get moving more. Ultimately, this was about getting out there and having a go to the finish line, rather than vying for a time.
This was about having fun with family and friends, being heroes together. This was about seeing the city from a new perspective, because there is something special about moving down Sturt Street on foot and feeling part of something bigger.
Some dressed in superhero costume, other had superhero face painting or took up the chance to perfect their superhero pose. But Run Ballarat’s trademark red t-shirts were a pretty clear sign you were out there to help save the day (and the children’s ward).
Run Ballarat is an event this city does so well. The Run Australia team say Ballarat has passion and this helps to both define us as a community and to build into next year’s event. Even though this race has been run, we need not wait until next year for more hero-time. Our community spirit and support makes this city pretty super whenever there is a call for help.
