Open studios, workshops, artists galleries and events encourage community involvement and support of the arts during Artober.
Artober organiser Alicia Kay said the series of events aimed to encourage people of all ages to get involved in the arts.
“The Hepburn Shire is an amazing place for artistic endeavours and I think it tends to draw people up here,” she said.
“Art is about trying to create and be able to enjoy. People very rarely take the time these days to sit and enjoy and art does that to people.”
Daylesford artist Brian Nash is exhibiting his series, Villages of Hepburn, at the Woodshed Gallery throughout October.
The exhibition showcases Hepburn’s villages and landscapes in more than 100 works from every corner of the shire.
“I love the shire and I want to try to encourage people to get out and have a look around,” Nash said.
“A lot of these places we went out to see I didn’t know were there. It has been a discovery for me as well to see these things.”
For many residents of Hepburn Shire, a visit to The Woodshed Gallery involves a challenge to guess the location of each painting before reading the description. For tourists admiring the work, the exhibition is an insight into the shire.
Ms Kay said the Villages of Hepburn exhibition reflected the key idea behind Artober.
“The work here is about the villages of Hepburn. What it represents is all the teeny tiny little villages and all the watering holes or whatever it might be that make up the whole shire,” she said.
“That’s why when we did the Artober opening we had it here (The Woodshed Gallery), because his work reflected the metaphor that we wanted to have as well – to be able to get all those artists from the tiny little corners and put them all together to be able to do something.”
Artober’s main event, the Daylesford Art Show, opens on November 2. Around 300 artworks from over 100 local artists will be on show at the Daylesford Town Hall over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
