Daylesford police Sergeant Barry Hills was off-duty when he was killed in a crash with a car at Darley, near Bacchus March.
He was acting officer-in-charge at Bacchus Marsh Police Station when he died.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Victoria Police Association secretary Sergeant Wayne Gatt said police officers across the Ballarat and Mooroobool region had worked with Sergeant Hills.
“I know how good a policeman and colleague he was to so many,” he said.
“He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and our members are shocked by his sudden passing.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, and workmates at this difficult time.”
Sergeant Hills also spent time as the officer-in-charge at the Daylesford Police Station.
He worked in criminal investigations in the Ballarat area before taking up the position.
Sergeant Gatt said he was very well known and respected in the community.
“He was a real people’s person and somebody that was well suited to community policing,” he said.
Sergeant Hills played at the North Ballarat Football Club, with his brothers Paul and Chris in the Ballarat Football League and also coached Redan during the 1990s.
