But the Newlyn bred Olympian has overcome stress fractures to be selected for her second world championships, this time in London in August.
Tallent battled through a stress fracture in femur in the 20-kilometre walk at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year to finish 40th.
On the road to recovery post Rio, stress fractures struck again – this time in her right tibia.
Tallent, 24, admitted there were times when she began to question herself and whether she wanted to continue the sport her older brother Jared has blazed a trail in.
"There were times where I thought that it could be easier giving up," Tallent said.
"It was pretty challenging, I have never had that many injuries before, or at least this many big ones.
"It was also very hard to get my training right when I came back so I wouldn't keep getting injured.
"So I just had to really push through this year and see how I went. Luckily I hung in there and made the world championships."
Tallent's still not 100 per cent, but she's using London as a springboard for her next big goal. The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast. There she has her sights set on a possible podium finish.
"My biggest goal at the moment is to make next year's Commonwealth Games team," Tallent said.
"The goal [for London] is to go and have a good experience and a positive race. I plan on racing to the ability that I know, and it is all about building up experience for next year. I am still coming back from my injuries so I am only doing half the amount of kilometres that I would normally. I am definitely not going to be at full fitness by the time I race there.
"If I have a good lead in I have a good chance of possibly winning a medal ... I want to make sure I am in the best possible shape I can be to maybe finish on the podium."
Not only is Olympic gold medallist Jared Tallent her brother, but her coach as well after he took over the role in 2014.
