Words in Winter director Maia Irell’s passion for storytelling is clear, somewhat expected for a writer, producer and editor.
“Words and stories help us to relax and help us to connect to our roots,” she said.
A connection to roots is pertinent to this year’s Words in Winter theme Origins.
“The stories of our origins are what keep us going,” Mrs Irell said.
“Those stories are the stories of our lives.
“Origins seemed like a pertinent theme to be explored more deeply at this time in the world where people in all sorts of places are without homes.”
Words in Winter is celebrating 15 years with a captivating lineup of writers and thinkers in Daylesford, Trentham, Clunes and Maryborough from August 4 to 13.
Renowned human rights activist and barrister Julian Burnside QC, in conversation with award-winning writer and human rights activist Arnold Zabel, will discuss the challenges stemming from Australia’s refugee crisis and its origins.
Mrs Irell said among other highlights, she is looking forward to hearing the stories of Castlemaine-based author Cate Kennedy.
“Cate Kennedy is going to do two shows, telling two stories,” she said.
“They are stories to make you laugh and cry and dig deep.”
Mrs Irell said Words in Winter captures the region’s character.
“I think what we highlight in the festival are the things that are important to the region,” she said.
“It is catered to a smaller community. The venues are small. It is that cold weather, thinking people’s festival.”
Words in Winter co-director Kevin Childs said there were an astonishing amount of talented writers and poets in the region, a place that boasts ample stories of origin.
“This place is full of stories, from the early days when the gold mines were here to when the Swiss Italians found the spas,” he said.
“Before that there were local Aboriginal clans. Now we come to the story of the three lost children and their anniversary.
“There are so many people from so many different countries here with astonishing stories to tell, so it is very rich with history.”
The 10-day festival includes workshops and artist panels in addition to stimulating conversations and powerful storytelling.
Local volunteers and artists have organised the event with the help of community and local business support.
