The Claxton Fountain underwent a restoration by the City of Ballarat, which was opened to the public on Tuesday.
Works include painting of the rendered and metal surfaces and reconstruction of the structure that had been broken.
City of Ballarat mayor, Samantha McIntosh, unveiled the renovated fountain:
“The Botanical Gardens are very important to the people of Ballarat and we know that having running water nearby has a positive impact on people’s health.
“That is why we are dedicated, over a number of years, to restore all of the fountains in the city.”
The fountain is named after Federick Moses Claxton, who was a Mayor of the City of Ballarat between 1872 and 1877.
It was erected in 1890 to recognise Claxton’s dedication to Lake Wendouree and Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
The Ballarat Botanical Gardens is celebrating its 160th year in 2017.
