A Ballarat City Council officer’s report to go before councillors this week, outlines work has began on township planning for communities including Miners Rest, Learmonth, Cardigan Village, Burrumbeet, Warrenheip and Buninyong.
Ballarat council’s strategic planning officer Jessie Keating said in her report preliminary discussions with key stakeholders in Miners Rest were already underway, with community consultation to began next month.
She said consultation would delve into the needs and wants of the community focusing on sporting facilities, infrastructure and growth. It comes after north ward councillors Daniel Moloney and Grant Tillett said the township had been neglected for decades and lacked basic infrastructure including a town centre.
Cr Moloney raised the issue at a council meeting last month after the majority of councillors voted against a planning application to build 38 dwellings in Howe Street. He described the township as being “devoid of any social atmosphere”. The most recent development plan drawn up for Miners Rest was completed in the early nineties before much of the existing infrastructure in the township was built.
