Matthew Porter was remanded into custody to reappear in the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court next month after his self-represented bail application was refused on Monday afternoon.
Police informant Senior Constable Jeremy Hancock told the court police will allege Porter was in a car which was involved in a collision at Redan just before 6pm on Saturday.
He said the car did not give way at the intersection of Rubicon and Talbot streets and collided with a second vehicle.
Senior Constable Hancock then told the court Porter and a passenger got out of the car and fled the scene, leaving without assisting the two occupants of the car they crashed into.
Porter is alleged to have jumped a number of fences while being pursued by police on foot before he was arrested a short distance away.
The court also heard Porter had seven outstanding warrants for his arrest relating to a number of alleged offences, including carrying a controlled weapon, handling stolen goods and numerous driving charges, which he previously failed to appear in court for.
Senior Constable Hancock said Porter was originally refused bail at an out-of-court bail justice hearing on Saturday night where the accused stated he failed to turn up to a number of his court hearings because he was fearful he may be incarcerated.
Opposing bail, Senior Constable Hancock said police had concerns Porter would fail to attend future court dates. Representing himself, Porter said he would attend his next court date.
But magistrate Gregory Robinson told Porter he failed to show any reason why he should not be kept in custody and because of this he was refused bail.
Porter was remanded to reappear in court on March 6.
Alleged car thief found with ice
In a separate matter, a 21-year-old man who was allegedly found with $800 worth of ice near a dumped stolen car will face court again in a months’ time.
Dylan Bell, who faces a string of charges including multiple counts of theft of a motor vehicle and two breaches of a community corrections order, appeared in court via videolink. His lawyer told the court she was hopeful the matters would be resolved by the time the matter returned to court on March 20.
