Although the tiny school only has five students left, its enjoying plenty of community support and even the generosity of renowned international artists.
At an upcoming community party on November 12, performance artists Moira Finucane and Clare St Clare are donating their time to entertain guests in a bid to support the school.
A paleontologist will also be onsite to run a workshop while environmentalist Tanya Loos will lead a torchlight exploration of the Wombat Forest and Kangaroo Creek.
The party is being held in aid of the school staying open, but also to launch a website the students have been working on for a number of years devoted to the forest’s evolution and history.
While the school is not out of danger yet, it will continue on throughout 2017, with staff optimistic about the possibility of fresh enrolments and even suggestions a new prep year group could be in the pipeline.
Teacher Bruce Rolfe said the school was delighted the scientists and artists were volunteering their time to the school.
Moira Finucane is a burlesque star, while Clare St Clare is an alternative performer known for her work with singer Mikelangelo.
The Wombat Forest indigenous garden party is being held as a follow to a Save Our School open day that was held in August.
“Next year the school will stay open because we have three grade 6s. There is also talk of a prep next year,” Mr Rolfe said.
“We have to wait and see, but the school continues and it’s a happy place at the moment. The five kids that are there are having a good time.”
He said the school council was “committed” to keeping the school, with its heavy focus on environmental science, open.
He said the website, which detailed the 4.6 billion year history of the road reserve beside the school, had wowed performers and attendees who were coming to the event.
“This party is to celebrate this amazing body of work, it’s an opportunity for past students to come back to the school and relive their love for the place, it’s an opportunity for the community to treasure where we live and it will be a really fun night.”
The party will also include baked potatoes and rhubarb and apple pie for attendees, plus stories around the campfire, a puppet show and live music.
The event will be held November 12 at 5pm, at 131 Bullarto South Road, Bullarto. The event is free and all welcome.
