As the only female on council, Cr Redwood said women were clearly underrepresented.
“Is there anything a man can do that a woman can’t do? No,” she said.
“They’re roughly 50 per cent of the population so it’s an issue of representation.
“I think women have an enormous amount to contribute to local government and I would strongly encourage women to consider standing in the October election.”
Cr Redwood’s comments come as celebrations loom for the shire’s International Women’s Day celebrations on March 3.
Former journalist and ALP politician Mary Delahunty will give a speech at the Daylesford Town Hall to commemorate the day, followed by women’s honour roll inductions, a photo exhibition of women across the shire and refreshments.
Cr Redwood said she had already been speaking with and encouraging a number of talented women to stand for council from a range of sectors, including health, disability, agriculture, business and tertiary education.
Similarly, she said she would be keen to see other contenders from more diverse backgrounds more reflective of the Hepburn population.
“It would be fantastic to have someone with a disability or with a background of the Dja Dja Wurrung or reflecting of diversity,” she said.
“We may not be Moreland but nevertheless it would be great to have a proper sense of diversity in council.”
Cr Redwood said Hepburn Shire was now in its 12th year of hosting International Women’s Day events, and was a leading municipality across Victoria in celebrating the annual occasion.
“We try to push the boundaries a bit and be inclusive in a world that is really diverse,” she said.
