Several stallholders sold out as people travelled from Melbourne, Ballarat and the wider region to be a part of the day. 

Organiser Leanne Kamp said it was fabulous to see the town buzzing with activity. 

"Everyone had smiles on their faces and it really was a beautiful occasion," she said. 

"Clunes is becoming increasingly popular and the market has come at a really good time for residents and traders.

"We would have been happy with about 800 guests, so to get more than a few thousand blew us away." 

The committee received almost $20,000 of state government funding to help establish an accredited market. 

It came after the previous market shut down. 

"I can see it's going to become quite a social event and it's good all that hard work has paid off," Ms Kamp said.

"Everyone is town is just ecstatic and the traders were also off their feet as a result. 

"Word on the street is that it was like a mini Booktown." 

Ripon MP Louise Staley, Alla Wolf-Tasker AM and Hepburn Shire councillor Neil Newitt officially opened the market. 

There was also free Clydesdale rides and a jumping castle.

The market will be held on the second Sunday of every month.

Singer Chooka Parker will perform on May 10.
