ANZAC100 will see vintage fire appliances, classic cars and the Creswick Light Horse Troop feature in a free street event from 6pm designed to honour the young men and women from the district who were at the front line during World War I.
Organisers hope people will create their own history by taking the family along to try and imagine what life must have been like a century ago when day-to-day life was disrupted by one of the most lethal wars the world has known.
Nine Daylesford fire fighters, one of whom died on the first day of the Gallipoli landings, will be remembered in a memorial presentation to the RSL and CFA.
A concert and dance in the Daylesford Town Hall from 7.30pm will feature wartime songs and music, including internationally-renowned Maureen Andrew and Danny Spooner, Sallie Harvey, Jenny Brown, Nel Staite, Graham Maxwell, Daylesford Municipal Band, Daylesford Swing Band and Daylesford Pipes & Drums performing a medley of World War II songs.
‘’This half of the evening is aimed at letting your hair down great grandparent style, to enjoy a spot of wartime R&R. Although not compulsory, people are encouraged to dress up in war era fashions and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed,’’ an organising spokesman said.
ANZAC100 bookings can be made at eCasa, 89 Vincent Street, Daylesford, or www.trybooking.com/GORT with more information available at www.anzac.org.au
All proceeds from ANZAC100 will go to the Daylesford RSL Sub Branch to aid the Daylesford War Memorial refurbishment.
ANZAC 100 planning group leader and RSL member Frank Page said WWI history was a unique and special part of the fabric of the Daylesford and district community.
“With the ageing of veterans it is important that the RSL reaches out to the wider community to share this important history and experience,’’ he said.
‘’Our community wants to honour and respect the memory of those who served over the years.’’
