The Courier has been inundated with calls, emails, well-wishes and donations since the story of Brian Duff was published on Tuesday.
Mr Duff, a truckie, was driving his prime-mover near Colac on February 4 last year when he hit and killed a young farmhand crossing the road on a quad bike.
He has since battled with severe post- traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, while the financial strain has been dire due to strict WorkCover regulations.
But the region has banded together for the Duff family, with many, like the team at the Farmers Arms Hotel in Creswick, organising a trivia night to raise money and awareness.
Farmers Arms publican Eddie Koene said Mr Duff’s story struck a chord with both staff and customers.
“It’s a very sad story and we just thought we, as a community, should pull together to help out,” Mr Keone said.
“When we went through the floods here a few years ago, and many of us lost a lot, the community got together and supported us.
“This is our chance to do a similar thing.”
Mr Keone said neither he or his staff knew the Duffs, but said many could relate to such hardship.
“What they’re going through is a terrible thing and now is the time they need support,” he said.
“So we’d ask everyone to come along to the trivia night and help out.”
The Duffs said they had been “touched” by the generosity of the community, with many in the region making anonymous donations and offers of help.
The trivia night at the Farmers Arms Hotel will be held on March 27.
It will include auctions and raffles, with entry $10.
For more information call the hotel on 5345 2221.
