The Daylesford couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Monday, opting for a quiet celebration to reflect on times past.
"It was definitely love at first sight for me when we met at a dance in Hampton," Pat said.
"He had black hair and blue eyes and had the Irish look that really got me.
"I'll always remember waiting for him outside the dance hall and he came along in his pushbike.
"We had lots of fun."
The pair were married within two years and "haven't thought of anyone else since".
Along the way, John worked as a technician and also completed national service training.
Pat stayed at home raising their children.
They didn't travel much, preferring picnics and time spent at home.
The duo moved to Daylesford in 1979 to start a business and bring up their six children.
They admit there have been some hard times along the way - but they've been lucky enough to get through it together.
"We lost all our money when our business collapsed but we had each other," Pat said.
"I guess you could say we haven't been wealthy with money but we're very wealthy with love and children."
The pair moved away from Daylesford for a year in 1991 to Paynesville but we were back by 1993, Pat said.
They "just loved the community too much" and it's now this community - as well as strong family bonds - that is keeping them strong.
"John lives in a nursing home now," Pat said.
"He used to be my Mr Fix It and I miss having him around home but he's just down the road and we still see each other every day and spend the afternoons together.
"It's all about that give and take, and being there for one another, no matter what.
"And lucky for me, he's still got those beautiful blue eyes."
