A 350-signature online petition is calling on the school to give teacher Glen Muller his job back, with students also wearing "Save Mr Muller" t-shirts to protest the decision.
Mr Muller reapplied for his job this year, following 18-months in the job. An external applicant was appointed to the role.
Principal Graeme Holmes said it was normal procedure for teaching vacancies to arise.
But students are taking action over the decision, saying Mr Muller was not only a great, easy going person but a great teacher.
"Many students trusted, respected, and very much appreciated Glen," the petition says.
"He is not a teacher to shout orders at kids, and then punish them for not understanding. He takes his time to help others, talks to them, and helps inspire them to learn."
But Mr Holmes said ultimately, it was about finding the best person for the job.
"At times, some people believed they are the best person for the position and they become very popular," he said.
"They argue and make the point they should be given the position but we have to advertise vacancies and make the right appointment."
He said while there was tension at the school over the decision, he had worked to explain the situation to students.
"We have worked with them and listened to their point of view," he said.
The student council declined to comment.
