Registrations are open for this year's Walk to School campaign, which encourages children to swap the road for the pavement next month.
VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said only one in five Victorian primary school children got the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
She said walking to school was a great way to overcome this and start building healthy habits.
“Regular physical activity is essential for a healthy mind and body and to prevent chronic illnesses, particularly those associated with obesity," she said.
“We hope that children who take part in Walk to School will adopt a year-round walking routine that will put them on the path to good health for the rest of their lives.”
Ms Rechter said the campaign was also beneficial for parents, with more than two-thirds of Australian adults only getting low levels of exercise.
Last year more than 30,000 students across Victoria took part and walked more than 400,000 kilometres.
